ANPR for factory gates and weighbridges

ANPR at a factory gate reads truck and vehicle registration plates automatically, so the gate log is created without manual entry and can be reconciled against the weighbridge and the gate pass. The dominant failure at industrial sites is not the model but plate contamination: mud, dust and damage that no recognition system can recover.

What the gate problem actually is

Most plant gates already have a register. A guard writes down the vehicle number, the time, the transporter and the docket. The register is not the problem. The problem is that it is slow, it is written under time pressure with trucks queued behind, and it cannot be reconciled against anything without someone typing it up afterwards.

ANPR replaces the capture, not the process. The plate becomes a timestamped record the moment the vehicle arrives, which makes three things possible that a handwritten register does not: automatic in-time and out-time per vehicle, cross-checking the plate against an expected arrival list, and cross-checking the plate against the weighbridge ticket for the same vehicle.

Worked example: gate throughput

Manual gate entry, per vehicle: about 90 s (stop, record, verify docket, raise barrier)

200 vehicles per day × 70 s saved = 14,000 s = 3.9 hours of gate time per day

The assumptions matter more than the result. If your guards already work from a printed expected-arrivals list and the barrier is the bottleneck rather than the paperwork, the saving is much smaller. Measure your own current cycle time at the gate before accepting any throughput claim, including ours. The number above is arithmetic on stated assumptions, not a measured outcome at your site.

The constraint specific to industrial gates

Factory ANPR fails differently from mall or society ANPR. At a residential gate, plates are clean and the failure mode is two-wheeler pixel density. At a plant gate, the vehicles are tippers, trailers and tankers that have driven through mud, quarry dust or cement, and a plate with characters physically obscured cannot be recovered by any model. This is a materials problem, not a software problem, and any vendor who does not raise it has not worked on industrial sites.

Three responses work, and they are worth designing in from the start:

Weighbridge reconciliation

This is where plant ANPR earns more than it does at the gate. A weighbridge ticket records a weight against a vehicle number that someone typed in. Reading the plate at the weighbridge independently, and matching it to the ticket, closes a gap that is otherwise reconciled only on trust.

None of this requires the ANPR to be perfect. It requires the exceptions to be surfaced for a human to resolve, which is a much lower bar than unattended automation.

Camera placement at a plant gate

The general ANPR camera requirements apply, with two industrial adjustments. Trucks carry plates higher than cars, so a camera set for car height reads trailers at a steep vertical angle. And plant gates frequently have a single wide lane shared by everything from two-wheelers to trailers, which is the hardest case, because the pixel density required for the smallest plate governs the whole design.

Where the plant already has cameras at the gate, an on-site appliance can pull RTSP from the existing recorder for general surveillance analytics. Plate reading usually still needs a dedicated lane camera, because general-purpose gate cameras are almost never mounted for it.

Data protection

Vehicle numbers at a plant gate frequently belong to employee vehicles and named transporters, which makes them personal data where they can be linked to an individual. Set a retention period tied to the reconciliation cycle rather than keeping the log indefinitely, and post notice at the gate. Frequently asked questions

Will ANPR read plates on muddy trucks?

Not when the characters are physically obscured, and no system can. Format validation and multi-frame voting recover partially contaminated plates, but heavy contamination is a materials problem. Design for it by pairing the plate read with a second identifier such as RFID or a docket number, so a failed read degrades to manual entry rather than blocking the gate.

Can ANPR use the cameras already at our gate?

For general gate surveillance analytics, usually yes, through an on-site appliance pulling RTSP from the existing recorder. For plate reading specifically, usually no, because general-purpose gate cameras are rarely mounted at the angle and pixel density that plate OCR requires. Expect to add one dedicated camera per lane.

How does ANPR help with weighbridge reconciliation?

Reading the plate independently at the weighbridge lets you check the ticket against what the camera saw, rather than against what an operator typed. Combined with a gate read, it also surfaces vehicles weighed with no gate entry, and tare and gross weighments that do not belong to the same vehicle.

What if a truck has no readable plate at all?

The system should log it as unread with the image attached, not silently drop it. A gate log that looks complete but omits every failed read is worse than one that shows the gaps, because it gives false confidence in reconciliation reports built on top of it.

Does a mixed lane with two-wheelers and trailers work?

It works, but the design is governed by the hardest case. Two-wheeler plates need roughly twice the pixel density of car plates, and trailer plates sit much higher. A single camera serving both compromises on each. Where volumes justify it, separating two-wheeler and heavy vehicle lanes solves more than any model change.
